Ornamental Designer Pro

Designer Overview

The visual designer is the core of Ornamental Designer Pro. Here's how the interface works.

Interface Layout

The designer: configuration panel on the left, live preview on the right.

The designer is split into two main areas:

  • Configuration Panel (left) — All the settings for your gate, organized into collapsible sections. Change any value and the preview updates instantly.
  • Preview Area (right) — A live rendering of your gate design. Zoom in/out, and see dimensions overlaid on the drawing.

Choosing a Panel Type

Configuration Sections

The config panel is organized into sections that start collapsed. Each section expands when you fill it out. The available sections depend on your panel type, but the common ones include:

Panel Basics
Panel type, fill color, and gate-type-specific settings (slide style, slope, etc.)
Dimensions
Width and height with imperial/metric display based on your unit settings
Posts
Post count, size, height, caps, baseplates, masonry columns, hinges, and extensions
Frame
Tube sizes for top, bottom, left, and right frame members, diagonal braces, uprights
Top Profile
Flat, arched, reverse arch, peaked, or compound arch with configurable heights
Rails
Add horizontal rails at any position, configure shape (flat or curve-following)
Pickets
Size, spacing, style (standard/twisted/hammered), spear points
Dog Pickets
Shorter pickets below a rail, with independent size and spacing
Section Panels
Solid fills, chainlink, pickets-solid hybrid panels
Barb Wire
2 or 3 strands of barb wire above the panel (flat top only)
Panel Lock
Mag lock or manual lock placement on the gate
Mounting Plate
Plate for attaching an operator, closer, or custom bracketry
Components
Add library finials, post caps, and custom component overlays

Zoom Controls

Use the + and buttons above the preview to zoom in and out. The percentage shown is relative to the default zoom for your panel type.

Dimensions Toggle

Toggle the Show Dimensions switch in the config panel to overlay dimension annotations directly on the preview. This gives you a quick reference for overall width, height, post-to-post measurements, and picket spacing.

For full annotation control (adding custom dimensions, arrows, text, and spec blocks), use the dedicated Annotation Tool.

Saving Your Design

Click the Save button at the top of the designer to save your work. You'll be prompted to enter:

  • Project name — a descriptive name for this design
  • Customer info (optional) — name, address, phone, email for the customer this design is for
  • Project notes (optional) — any notes about the project

Use Save As to create a copy of an existing design under a new name.

Exporting

After saving your design, click the Export button on the design card (from the dashboard) to open the dedicated export page. The export page offers several download options:

  • Clean Drawing — the gate rendering without any dimension lines
  • Drawing with Dimensions — the gate with all dimension lines overlaid. For multi-panel projects, this creates one page per panel (PDF) or a ZIP with one file per panel (other formats).
  • Annotated Drawing — includes dimensions, spec block, and any custom annotations you added in the Annotation Tool
  • Material & Cut List — export as PDF or Excel
  • Project Estimate — cost breakdown as PDF or Excel

Available formats are PDF, PNG, JPG, SVG, and DXF. You can also download everything at once with the Download All button.

Multi-Panel Projects

You can add multiple panels to a single project using the panel tabs at the top of the designer. Each panel has its own independent configuration — so you can combine a swing gate with fence panels, for example.

  • Click the + button to add a new panel
  • Click a panel tab to switch between panels
  • Double-click a tab name to rename it
  • Each panel can be offset horizontally and vertically relative to the others
